The City-Level Youth Symposium held in Mumbai in January 2019 brought together youth, civil society, policymakers, and parents to discuss critical issues faced by adolescents in rapidly transforming urban environments. Organized by SNEHA and Dasra, the event emphasized youth-centric

policymaking the event emphasized youth-centric policymaking under the theme “Not About Me… Without Me.” It showcased the voices and perspectives of young people on topics like health, gender equity, education, and livelihoods. Through panel discussions, workshops, and creative performances, participants explored challenges and solutions, highlighting the importance of youth agency and intergenerational dialogue.

The symposium covered themes such as healthy living during adolescence, gendered experiences, and bridging the gap between aspirations and access to resources. Workshops addressed topics like mental health, sexual and reproductive rights, and societal norms. Young panelists shared inspiring stories of overcoming barriers, pursuing education, and contributing to their communities. Gender inequities, especially the restrictions faced by young girls, and the lack of systemic support for adolescents were central concerns. The discussions underscored the need for policies to be inclusive, holistic, and youth-informed.

Key recommendations from the event included better implementation of youth-focused programs, integration of comprehensive sexuality education, and creation of adolescent-friendly services. It also called for systemic efforts to address gender discrimination, promote mental health, and bridge educational and employment gaps. The event was a significant step in fostering dialogue and collaboration among stakeholders to create a supportive ecosystem for youth development.

The symposium concluded with an emphasis on collective action and intersectoral partnerships to ensure that young people transition into healthy, responsible adulthood. It showcased the potential of youth as change agents, urging society to listen to their voices and tailor interventions to their needs.
