Stories of Change

Namaz Tales

During the  holy month of Ramzan muslims observe fast  from dawn till sunset.  Muslims refrain from consuming food and drinking liquids. During home visits, Community Organisers (Cos)  found out that pregnant women are observing fast.

Program Officer ( PO) decided to focus on this issue through “Godhbharai” event where Antenatal ( pregnant) and Post natal ( post pregnancy) women come together.

According to the Hadith, holy book of the muslims It is becomes compulsory for Muslims to start fasting when they reach puberty, so long as they are healthy and sane, and have no disabilities or illnesses. Exemptions to fasting are travel, menstruation, severe illness, pregnancy, and breast-feeding.”

The PO found these exemptions as a valuable starting point and requested the Maulana to announce these exemptions from the masjid after Namaz so that it reaches the mass. The SNEHA team shared and  discussed this during Godhbharai.

After these discussions majority of women agreed to have their regular food intake even during Ramzan. They initiated it with fruits and healthy laddu distributed during Godbharai.

SNEHA team succeeded in helping pregnant women to maintain their  nutrition status and used sociocultural constructs to make a positive behaviour change in the community.
